MEDLAR
Medlars were once quite common in Europe and were widely planted in New Zealand when the first European settlers came in. The fruit is round and brown russety skinned and is inedible until it turns soft ( or is “bletted”) In the north the fruit is picked just before the birds eat them and left on a shelf until they go soft, when they can be eaten raw or cooked. , used in baking, bread, jam, wine etc.
NASHI
A double grafted Nashi, Hosui and Nijiseiki. Hosui being a large round excellent eating juicy and sweet brown rusted fruit ripening before Nijiseiki, which is medium sized sweet and juicy crisp and has a creamy white skin. They pollinate each other.
