NUTS

ALMOND

Mona Vale

A disease resistant, regular and reliable bearer of strong flavoured nuts. An early and prolific bearer it is self fertile (doesn’t need a pollinator) and is a pollinator for other almonds. It flowers early and long and is worth growing for the flowers alone! Almonds need Mediterranean conditions to crop well. Exposed windy, dry boney soils and dry flowering period. 6-10m.

Mona Vale Seedlings

Almonds grow well and fruit true from seed .

PINENUTS

Beautiful large trees up to 20m, good for shelter. Starts to bear after 9 years, each cone takes 2 full years to mature. 50 to a 100 nuts per cone. Very tolerant of marginal conditions.

MACADAMIA

Seedling trees are obviously cheaper than grafted trees, they are also more variable. They may take longer to begin flowering-up to five years but, like walnuts, by year ten crops will be comparable. Seedlings are great for hedgerows, however to do well Macadamia’s all need shelter, so don’t put them in the front line of your shelter belt. Self Fertile.

Renown is a large thin shelled nut which is relatively easy to crack, reliable producer of nuts true to type.

Elimbah my favourite, large thin shelled very sweet nut. I reckon this is the best home orchard variety because of it’s sugar content. Commercial varieties are selected for high oil content so they can be roasted without burning.
