WHY BUY ORGANIC COTTON?

It is estimated that 50% of the pesticides used in India are applied onto cotton fields. Apart from the damage caused to the environment, this throws farmers into debt as pesticides and fertilisers are bought on credit and debts cannot be repaid if the harvest fails. Pesticides contaminate water supplies and farm labourers can suffer long term illness from exposure to the chemicals.
More recently the introduction of genetically engineered cotton has meant an
increase in crop failures, pushing already marginal subsistence farmers to even deeper levels of poverty. Traditionally these farmers would have saved their
cotton seeds from one season to the next. The patenting of genetically
engineered seed prohibits them from doing this.

Bishopston Trading is a British company that works with the people of K.V. Kuppam in Southern India through the South India Rural Development Trust, and all profits go back to the people of the village.
In recent years this trust has been able to fund a
beautifully designed factory that has been built on the edge of the village, surrounded by coconut groves and rice paddy fields.
This has hugely improved the working conditions, giving workers light airy units in which to work, and most
importantly to them—all in one location.

FAIR TRADE
The FAIRTRADE mark is an independent consumer label. It appears on each of these sheets and pillowslips as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal.
Fair Trade is a partnership between producers and
consumers which ensures that producers receive good working conditions and fair prices. This means paying prices which reflect the true cost of production and supporting producer
organisations in their social development projects—many provide health and
education facilities. It means promoting the empowerment of women, advising on product development and encouraging environmental responsibility. And it means committing to long term relationships to provide stability and security.
