Arrowroot (Canna edulis) PB5 60cm   $12

From the swollen root of the plant, arrowroot can be steamed and eaten as a vegetable or used for thickening sauces and stews. It is an ideall form of starch for anyone with gluten intolerance.

Arrowroot is a good barrier plant and provides good biomass for the compost.

Babaco (Carica pentagona) PB5 60cm    $18

The most productive of all the caricas. One tree can have up to 50 fruit on it at one time. Fruits within 1st year, the first fruits set lowest on the trunks are always the largest around 30cm long and 10cm wide, they ripen the earliest and the ripening progress extends up the trunk over two months. Fruit are seedless, skin yellow thin and edible. Tree-ripened they taste wonderful – fruit are extremely juicy and thirst quenching. Good for greenhouses because they only grow up to 2 metres. Excellent for flans, pancakes, fruit bread and fruit salad or fresh from the tree. Babaco chutney is tops too.

Cardomom - False cardomom (Alpinia nutans) PB3 50cm    $13

Also known as poor man's cardomom, this plant has highly aromatic leaves that smell just like the cardomom spice, and can be used instead. Like ginger, it will form large clumps up to 2 metres high, and is an excellent addition if you wish to create that tropical ambience in your garden.It gives off a wonderful spicy aroma if you brush the leaves. An easy care plant for a pot or in the conservatory.

VEGETABLE AND FLOWER SEEDLINGS

We always have a good selection of seedlings and herb plants.

Some are grown in plastic pots. Some are grown in trays, and these can be wrapped in newspaper for you.

We can send seedlings and herb plants to you by courier if you can't make it to the shop!

You won't find the seedlings on the v-cart as the stock is changing all the time. But if you do want to receive seedlings by mail order, just email your request to shop@kaiwakaorganics.co.nz. We will give you a quote for freight based upon where you are located. You can pay by credit card over the phone, cheque or internet banking.
