WORKSHOPS FOR SELF RELIANCE

2012 PROGRAMME

 

Welcome to the Kaiwaka Organics Workshop Programme for 2012.

We ask for a deposit of 50% of the cost of the workshop when you make your booking.
Payment can be by cheque, internet banking or you can give Credit Card details by phone.

Bookings can also be made through this website, using the SHOP NOW tab. This gives you the option to pay the full fee by credit card.

Your deposit will be refunded in full if the workshop is cancelled.

It is really helpful to us if you can confirm your place on any workshop that you book into at least 2 weeks before the workshop.
Workshops may be cancelled if numbers are insufficient, so this gives us time to consider and to notify everyone whether the workshop will go ahead or not.

Tea and coffee is provided on all workshops.

Please bring your own lunch, unless otherwise stated.

BEE KEEPING - FULL. SEE BELOW FOR 25TH FEBRUARY

Saturday 11th February/ 9 - 4

Daniel Tohill / $100

The art of natural bee keeping is becoming increasingly important as we witness a decline in the bee population. Daniel uses natural bee keeping methods. The workshop will cover

monthly management, equipment, hive situations and moving hives, swarming, storage, bee keeping law, diseases, wintering a hive and keeping records. He will also share some information on Warre and other Top Bar Bee Hives.

HOW TO BUILD A PIZZA OVEN

Saturday 25th February / 9 - 4

Wolfgang Hiepe / $120

This is a hand-on workshop and Wolfgang will work with you as he shows you how to build an earth oven using mainly clay and sand.
You will learn everything you will need to know in one day, so that you can build your own oven at home.
These beautiful and simple ovens can cook bread and casseroles as well as pizza.

We have yet to confirm the venue for this workshop but we will let you know. It will be somewhere in either Kaiwaka or Mangawhai.

ORCHARD DESIGN

Saturday 3rd March / 9 - 4

Daniel Tohill / $100

When you are planning an orchard there are many aspects to consider: shelter, water, sun, access, ground covers, nutrient management, pest control and which plants prefer which conditions. Daniel will cover all of these from a Permaculture perspective.

GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS

Saturday 10th March / 9 - 4

Niki LeMesurier / $100

Niki will take you through all the basics, from seed raising to preparing and planting your garden beds.

The emphasis will be on making your own composts, seed raising mix, etc, so that you can keep your

costs down.

Niki is an experienced organic gardener and a qualified landscape designer.

HOME CHEESE MAKING

Saturday 31st March / 10 - 3

Sabine Drueckler / $110

Sabine will take you through all the steps of making a soft cheese, starting with the fresh milk through to storing the cheese. It is the same process, if you are making Blue Vein or a Brie style cheese. With a little variation you make Feta - you will gain the confidence to go home and make your own soft cheese. Sabine will also show you how to make yoghurt, quark and butter. No expensive special gear is required. Sabine uses equipment that you will find in most kitchens.

PERMACULTURE DESIGN BASICS

Saturday 28th April / 9 - 4

Permaculture is about living a more productive sustainable lifestyle. It is a design system for your backyard or farm that integrates landscape design, organic gardening, architecture, and the understanding of natural systems and patterns. It helps you understand the relationships between these elements and the way
they are placed together. This workshop will guide you through understanding what permaculture is all about and how to apply them to your own circumstances.

BREAD MAKING

Saturday 26 May / 10—3                                                                                                         

Sabine Drueckler / $100
In this workshop you will learn basic recipes—how to make nourishing and wholesome bread with or without starters like sourdough or yeast.
Sabine uses wheat and also different grains like spelt, rye, rice, corn and more.
Includes gluten-free bread making.

PRUNING

Saturday 9th June/ 9 - 4                                                                                                      

Steve Hare / $100

Good pruning is essential in order to keep your fruit trees cropping well, in healthy vigorous condition and at a manageable size. This is a hands on workshop you you'll get lots of practice. Steve is a master pruner and an excellent teacher. This is a very popular workshop, so book early!
